Southerly Yachts began building in Southampton, UK in the mid 1970s. They were innovative designs, lifting keel technology being fairly new then, the early Southerly 28s became very popular and 148 were built. The Southerly 28, was the design that started the now renowned range of lifting keel cruisers from Southerly.
A total of 148 Southerly 28's were built and gained the reputation, 'the boat that floats on a damp lawn', due to the shallow draft once the keel is retracted. This made the boats a popular choice for drying harbours, and use on inland waterways.
