HISTORY & CONSTRUCTION: BLACK BESS was built in Portsmouth circa 1870 by Harry Feltham to a traditional Itchen Ferry working boat design. Registered for shrimp and oyster dredging she was bought in 1900 by the Chatfield family of Wooton, Isle of Wight and registered CS32. BLACK BESS fished for three generations of the Chatfield family and was only sold on the death of Charles Chatfield to Norman Gaches in 1974. HISTORY & DESCRIPTION: The Yachting World 5-tonner was the product of a competition staged by the magazine for architects to devise a family cruising yacht. Plans were made available widely and yachts were built around the British Isles and abroad. The plans offered three rigs, gaff cutter, bermudian cutter and sloop. HISTORY & DESCRIPTION: NORDOST is a fully documented ‘Windfall Yacht’ so-called as they fell like ripe fruits after the Second World War and were brought back to England as spoils of war. NORDOST was liberated by a Spitfire pilot and sailed back to Harwich in 1946 from the Dutch Canal where she was in use as accommodation for Luftwaffe pilots. LOTUS – HISTORY & DESCRIPTION: In 1926 William Fife 111 was commissioned by the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club to produce a new one-design class suitable for racing in the Conway Estuary and Menai Straits.
